FLY THE FLAG
Fly the Flag for Suicide Prevention
8-12 SEPT, 2025
Every year, MATES in Construction invites workers, companies, and communities across Aotearoa to take part in the Fly the Flag campaign — a powerful initiative that shines a light on the mental well-being of workers in the construction industry. This year’s theme, “Be the Voice of Hope,” calls on all of us to show courage and have the life-saving conversations that can change—and even save—lives.
What is Fly the Flag?
Fly the Flag Week is an opportunity to come together and have courageous conversations about mental health. Flying a flag lets others know that this is a site, store, or office where you can speak up if you are struggling.
It’s about sending a clear message: you are not alone, and there is hope. When we raise the MATES flag on worksites around the country, we’re not just raising awareness—we’re lifting each other up.
The construction industry loses one person to suicide every five days. These are not just numbers; these are our mates, our whānau, and our community.
To Be the Voice of Hope means to step forward. It means asking someone, “Are you okay?” and meaning it. It means listening without judgment. It means knowing where to turn, and guiding others to the help they need. And sometimes, it just means being there—quietly, consistently, compassionately.
There are many ways to be a Champion for Mental Health and Well-being. It starts with knowing that it’s okay not to be okay, but it’s not okay to do nothing about it.
Hope doesn’t have to be a grand gesture. It is ignited in even the smallest acts:
- A check-in at smoko.
- A mate noticing someone is not themselves and saying something.
- A supervisor making time for a toolbox talk that includes mental health.
- A site that proudly flies the MATES flag.
How You Can Get Involved
Fly the Flag 2025 is more than a symbolic gesture — this is MATES fifth Fly the Flag campaign, and it has become a national movement. Whether you are a labourer, engineer, project manager, or apprentice, here’s how you can take part:
- Host a toolbox talk focused on mental health.
- Share your story or message of hope on social media using #FlyTheFlag25 or #FTF25
- Engage with a MATES Connector or invite a MATES Field Officer to speak on-site.
- Get your team together
Together, We Change the Culture
By standing together and using our voices to ignite hope, we’re challenging the stigma that stops so many from speaking out. We’re building a culture that looks after its own—a culture where it’s okay to not be okay, and where help is always within reach.
Hope isn’t just a feeling—it’s an action. So, let’s act.
This year, let’s not just stand together.
Let’s Be the Voice of Hope.
During Fly the Flag, many of our Partners hold events – Toolbox Talks, BBQs, morning teas – bringing workers together as a reminder that We are Stronger Together. Please reach out to your local Field Officer or let us know info@mates.net.nz if you have an event in mind.
